Shercock is a small town on the east of County Cavan and on the Cavan Monaghan border. The modern Irish language name for Shercock is ‘Searcoig’ or ‘Searcog’; either name may be translated literally as “young love”. The Monaghan poet and novelist Patrick Kaganagh penned the well known novel Tarry Flynn, which is believed to be largley based on his experience as a young farmer in Monaghan and his quest for love and the meaning of life. But while Patrick Kavanagh is mostly associated with his home town of Inniskeen in Monaghan, Tarry Flynn is actually set in Cavan.
