The town of Lifford lies in the Finn Valley area of East Donegal. The town grew up around a castle built there by Manghus Ó Domhnaill, an Irish Clan leader in the 16th century.

In 1634 Magdalene Tasker was born in Cavanacor House. She later married Robert Bruce Pollock and their family emigrated to America settling in Somerset County in Maryland. In America they shortened their family name to Polk and in 1795, James Knox Polk a decendant of Magdalene was born and in 1845 he became the 11th. President of America until his death in 1849.
